All up and working !
I was sort of intrigued to follow a group of Hams at the CVARC club to build an amplifier. There was a choice of building a Solid State devide that put out approximately 140watts on 180-10m, OR a tube based amplifier, and depending on the Final Tubes anywhere from 150w – 2KW.
My original intention was to build the 140 watt Solid State amp, but I already had a lower power out (45w) amp still in a bag with all the loose parts ready to build, so making another that replaced this one that I haven’t built yet seemed unnecessary.
On to a tube amplifier !
Never built a linear amplifier (tube based) and thought it was a good idea. (hmmmm)…
So with the help of Rod Blocksome K0DAS as our mentor, I embarked on a rather strenuous task of making one from scratch…
Lots of decisions to making an amplifier, starting with How much power out? What bands? What Tubes to use in the final???ALC, T/R, Meters etc…etc…etc..
So my initial thought was just a 500w single 3-500z (because Rod had one lying about not being used…So that was a start..for a hunt for about 50 other pieces needed. Initially a Power Supply..that means Honking big transformer…So before I go any further and with a ton of suggestions from ROD,(we) decided to make it a full Kil0watt !!!I can always start off with a Single 3-500 and add the second tube…
Ok that changes things, now i really need a power supply that can provide 3KV at about 1/2 amp !!..So off to the hamfests..
Got a sweet deal on a supply almost totally perfect for my needs..sort of…EXCEPT.
Had to build the chassis from scratch to be able to hold this honking big transformer that has 3600v secondary, 3000v secondary, and a 1400v secondary. 8 – 100Uf 450v caps couple of smoothing caps a bridge rectifier and some healthy wire Dual Circuit Breaker and Voltmeter.
So how do i mount those caps? WALMART Cutting boards @ $ 0.88 each !!and some RTV to secure. Ok so after spending about 25 hours on making a chassis and 20 dollars for the rest of this supply….Not bad!…so far. Continue reading

YES it actually can crank out the 3KV !
Next to start working the sides of the case, and add the meter for the front panel..Simple.1 meter, 1 dual CB on the Front
Rear: dual 120v outlets, 220V line in, and a 3000V output connection…
Oh and a couple of spare holes inadvertently drilled…I’ll consider them cooling holes…More to follow on this project, as we get together 1 time a week, and with business travel, and other commitments, the XYL is starting to get pissed..
Not Another Half Finished Project !
Well I started another project, that is somewhat nearing completion. But not before taking up another project that will be a sister to this one.
So the SSB 6.1 is a single board transceiver capable of several bands CW and SSB. Built in audio amplifier and finals. It is controlled by the DDS which is mounted on the front panel.
The front panel design to match the bolted on DDS (which also required modification) and the main board prior to component mounting.
There currently are 2 Facebook pages dedicated to this transceiver. Both have excellent support help for those getting interested in building this rig.
The transceiver kit comes from Indonesia, and has very poor documentation, but this has been overcome by the moderators of the Facebook pages.
This has been put on hold a bit, for the Overshoes/Boots for this pipsqueek..

As you all know by now, if you are a Ham, that Glen Popiel KW5GP produced a book distributed by the ARRL. This book has some great, and not so great projects that you can build with the Arduino. They are well laid out, and the software is explained enough that even a newbie could build them.
There are also alternatives to the book, and in some ways compliment it. I’m in the middle of building (and taking apart) several Ham related Arduino projects.
One of which is a LCD Keypad Shield (shield is from iROBOT. The shield is currently a configurable Morse code Iambic Keyer. It has a good look to it, has multiple buttons available from programming. At some point I could post the software, but it is available on the net… somwhere.
other little proejcts include Ethernet control of high voltage relays. These can be used to power up your station from off base, and with other controls via your smartphone control the audio and keyline. If you are so inclined you could also control frequency via HRD and rotate your beam all remotely.
It only takes some time to mechanize and should not be difficult to hook up.
So with some thought in mind of what you want to do, and with the support of Glen and others, you can snazzy up that station of yours.

So your looking for a new tuner, antenna that is, and you figure that you should try and search eBay for a deal. eBay in the infancy was pretty good. Lots of honest people selling their used or barely used stuff. And of course the more you make the more Stuff you need!…Wait i sound like George Carlin.
So I needed a new Antenna Tuner because my AEA AT-300 isn’t sufficient to handle my Ameritron 811H Linear Amplifier. How do I know that, cause I smoked the Forward power sensing diode in it..Not too much smoke, but I turned to the tuner, and all I see is deflection of the SWR pointer…Ok that isn’t good.
Hunt up the schematic on line…and of course you can’t read the part numbers of the components, so hunting around in my other STUFF, I find a home made PWR?SWR meter, open it up, strip out the potentially good diode and try and disassemble the AT-300..Ha that was fun, they mounted the board directly over the chassis mounted connector on the back panel…of course the SO-239’s had lockwashers and nuts on the screws with about 1/4 in clearance to get at them.
Got them off, found that the diode was blown open, replaced it…and all is well with the AT-300…
I still needed a Tuner that would handle the AMP…so I bid on several auctions, lost them all. Until…
There was a MFJ Versa Tuner V (MFJ-989C), which would handle 3KW and had a built in Dummy Load…so I watched and waited..until the last 1/2 hour…put some odd numbered value in there, and hoped for the best. I got it for 177.00 which wasn’t too bad considering they cost about 2x that amount. Thought the 25 bucks for shipping was a bit much but oh well.
To make a long story longer..When I received the Tuner, the description wasn’t quite as it was stated, but not bad…Except the Meter lamp was burned out, the Inductor Knob wobbled a bit and squeeked like hell !!..Ended up taking it apart, replacing the wheat lamp with a bright white LED, cleaned up the front panel lubricated the gearing after cleaning the shafts…and now all seems well…
Earlier when I first got it, I couldn’t get it to tune on the Balanced line 450 Ohm NVIS Delta Loop that I’ve been using for about 4.5 years. Which I thought was strange…Of course the Jumper that was needed on the back panel wasn’t installed, jumpered the other 2 standoffs and that worked.
I also run a HexBeam that is good from 20M – 6M. Doesn’t like 30M which i accidently had the rig on trying to get the ‘balanced line’ working…OOPS…Blew out my Digital SWR /WATTMETER MFJ 826B…display worked ok, but no readings of FWD/Reflected signals..
Nutz…blew another diode in this one !!..of course I didn’t have what they recommended, so in the end replaced it, got it working, but not calibrated real well…even though i followed their instructions. They told me I could send it in if the diode didn’t fix it..I might..
I’m wondering with everything that goes on in daily life, how does one have time to blog?
It seems that most people don’t have good old fashion hobbies anymore. Live revolves around texting, YouTube, and Twitter, and I’m sure a dozen more like Facebook etc. When was the last time you read a book that wasn’t for a school assignment or the like.
When was the last time you went outdoors just to take a walk and enjoy wildlife (except if you live in Africa ;=))..
I’m not saying that i’m not involved in social media, except it just becomes a bit boring. I think I might be a bit old fashioned and think that a long phone call with someone who i’m wirelessly connected to is a bit more rewarding that seeing ‘highlights’ of their day.
but that is me, and I don’t really like phone calls either…maybe I’m a Hermit !
